Our Story

Honoring those we have lost to the mountains

The calling was never more clear than in September 2021. After Craig returned home from a stint teaching search and rescue medicine at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in the Garhwal Himalayas, he was faced with heart-wrenching news. An avalanche had struck the very people he had just been with, his students and colleagues, during a training exercise at 16,000 feet. His feeling of helplessness was overwhelming, knowing he was too far away to offer any immediate assistance and that in those high-altitude regions, rescue options were painfully limited. He knew he had to do something. It is from these efforts that the idea for the Mountain People Project was born.

Questions?

Mountain People Project collaborates with mountain rescue teams across the world to provide quality medical education. We work to ensure that each member of the rescue team is competent in providing basic medical intervention that could save a life on the mountain.

All mountain rescue teams should have adequate medical training, but it can be hard to find resources and medical professionals that are qualified and available to teach. We utilize a blend of classroom and scenario-based training to ensure your rescue team is prepared to provide medical interventions for those who you protect.
